Backyard Poultry Medicine

Birds are very keen at hiding all signs of illness and so owners face the challenge of determining when your companion is sick. Leave this responsibility to the veterinarians at Harlingen Veterinary clinic. Yearly examinations will pick up on subtle changes in your flocks behaviour allowing an illness to be detected and treated before things spiral out of control and your flock is very sick. At Harlingen Veterinary Clinic we provide medical care and services for:

  • Poultry (chickens)
  • Waterfowl (ducks)

To ensure that your avian friends enjoy a long, productive and healthy life we recomend the following services:

 Preventative Flock Examination (In-Clinic):

An important aspect of maintaining a healthy flock of chickens is appropriate veterinary care. At Harlingen Veterinary Clinic our veterinarians believe that identifying and preventing illness allows for happier more productive chickens. Our Veterinarians are happy to provide veterinary care to your flock to ensure quality of life, productivity and life long relationships.

Preventative Flock Examination (House Call):

In order to better assess your flock, a veterinarian can make a visit to your house to evaluate the health status of your flock. Throughout the visit, your veterinarian can provide valuable insight in preventing illness, increasing productivity and ensuring life long happy chickens.

Flock Parasite and Infectious Disease Screening:

Living outdoors means that exposure to parasite and infectious disease is part of the day to day challenge your flock is facing. At Harlingen Veterinary Clinic, our veterinarians provide diagnostic testing to identify parasite burden in your flock and to help identify infectious disease that may be responsible for illness or decreased production in your flock. If you have concerns about changes in egg laying, behaviour, or signs of illness in your flock please contact us to schedule an appointment with one of our veterinarians.

Flock Husbandry/Nutritional/Biosecurity Consultation

Understanding how to incoporate poultry into your backyard can be challenging at times, trying to balance proper nutrition, biosecurity and husbandry. At Harlingen Veterinary Clinic, we strive to educate our clients on the proper care of their flock . Our veterinarians can meet with you to discuss issues your flock may face and reccommend changes to nutrition, biosecurity and husbandry to allow your flock to thrive.

Avian Emergencies/Surgery/Therapeutic Procedures

Living outdoors means that the risk of predation is high for our backyard flocks. This means that attackers can injure birds in the flock, at Harlingen Veteirnary Clinic, our veterinarians stand ready to assist in those emergenices to provide top notch veterinary care to ensure a happy and healthy life for the birds in your flock. Our veterinarians also assist in providing medical care for any illness that occurs, such as bumblefoot (pododermatitis) which is a common condition affecting the feet of your flock. If you have any concerns related to the health of your flock please schedule an in-clinic visit or veterinary house call to have your flock examined.
